After Purchasing An Airtime Card Can I Hold On To It As Long As I Want?

I'm going to jail for nine months soon and need to be able to have my phone working when I get out so I'm not stuck. So could I buy an airtime card, bring the card and phone with me then just add the airtime when I'm released ? Or does it expire even if it hasnt been added? If so how long after I purchase the card is the expiration of the airtime?
