Can Dvd Affect My Blue Ray Player

Half way through movie.  Screen and sound froze.  Cleaned and restarted dvd. Forwarded to spot it froze again without sound.  Removed the DVD and put a new dvd in and no sound.  After we shut the blue ray player off the other dvd sound came back.  Is this a dvd problem?  I didn't know a damaged disc could affect the player????  This is a new blue ray player so I want to take it back if this is not something that could happen as a result of the dvd.  Please advise
