When the factory plug of a car stereo has been cut, it can be difficult to determine which wire is which. However, with a little effort, you can still connect a new stereo by using a wiring harness adapter that matches the wiring on your car with the wiring on your new stereo.

Here's what you can do to determine the wiring on your car:

Look up the wiring diagram: You can search for a wiring diagram for your 1996 Oldsmobile 88 online or in a repair manual. This diagram will show you the color codes for each wire.

Test the wires: With a multimeter, you can test each wire to determine its function. You can use the wiring diagram to match the colors of the wires to their corresponding functions, such as power, ground, and speaker wires.

Use a wiring harness adapter: To make the process easier, you can use a wiring harness adapter that matches the wiring on your car with the wiring on your new stereo. This adapter plugs into the factory wiring harness and provides you with a set of color-coded wires that match those on your new stereo.

It's important to note that if you're not comfortable with wiring or electrical work, it's best to seek the help of a professional to avoid causing damage to your car or your new stereo.

Without knowing the make and model of the car and stereo, it's difficult to provide specific instructions on how to connect the wires. However, here are some general steps to follow:
  1. Determine the wires: If the factory plug was cut, you will need to determine which wire is which. You can find a wiring diagram for your specific car and stereo online, or you can use a multimeter to test the wires for voltage and continuity.
  2. Match the wires: Once you have identified the wires, you will need to match them to the corresponding wires on your new stereo. Most car stereo wiring harnesses are color-coded, so you can match the wires by color. However, if the colors don't match, you can use a wiring diagram to determine which wire is which.
  3. Connect the wires: Once you have matched the wires, you can connect them using crimp connectors or solder. Make sure the connections are tight and secure, and wrap them with electrical tape to protect them from the elements.
  4. Test the stereo: Once you have connected the wires, turn on the car and the stereo to test the connections. Make sure all the speakers are working and the stereo is functioning properly.

It's important to note that incorrect wiring can cause damage to your car or stereo, so it's always a good idea to consult a professional if you are unsure about the wiring process.
