Bottom Heater Coil

Have had my Oster Over for nearly a year. It worked great except for setting labels washing off of the buttons. Now lower heating coil only heats when it wants to. Internal temp is usually correct but things burn on top and don't bake at all inside. Just before I give up and throw it away, it will bake something perfectly. What gives? (Oh and I double checked the buttons and had made the correct selection)
