A portable hotspot is basically a wireless router that you get from your cell phone carrier. It transmits a Wi-Fi signal that you can connect to using any Wi-Fi enabled device. The Sprint MiFi is an example of such a device. Some smartphones can be used as mobile hotspots as well for an extra monthly fee.
