Samsung Mantra Battery Error

I purchased a Samsung Mantra a few months back. Until now, I haven't had much problem with it. It refuses to let me charge the battery. If the phone is on, it says "battery charge error" and then proceeds to shut itself down. But even when the phone is shut off and it appears to be charging, the phone refuses to charge. What needs to be done? I'm considering going to get a new phone, but I'd like to try and fix this one.
