Singer Confidence 7470 Settings Don't Change

I was given a used 7470 and this is our first project. I am also new to sewing. For some reason we can't seem to change the settings for straight stich length. The option only gues up to 4.8. And it doesn't seem to make a difference in length anyway. Any ideas what I am missing?Thank you so much for any advice!!
