I asked the same question long ago, for a special airline that charges for carry-on and checked baggage. I was going to carry on a Longboard, which of course, is much longer than a regular board itself. This airline was Spirit Airlines. They said any means of transportation like a stroller, scooter, or skateboard can be counted as free carry on, but does not count as that one item you put underneath your seat.

When I was traveling through LAX yesturday afternoon, I saw what looked to be 3 "close-to-being-homless", "military" looking guys with a shorter longboard strapped to one pack, and a regular board strapped to the other backpack. Their backpacks were HUGE! You should be fine, especially if you find enough space in the overhead bin.

If you fly southwest airlines, you should be fine, without a hassel.

Hope this helped
