Can You Recover From Only Saving The File In Pdf Format?

Saved my tax file only in PDF. Been a user since Turbo Tax first came out and never had a problem. The pdf option imposes itself right at the end after one is exhausted from tax preparation.  I did not make the same mistake with my son's taxes and he is in normal tax format.  I will have to redo my taxes if I want to import this year's data inot next years Turbo Tax.  A conversion utility is unlikely and this is a fatal and glaring error in the product.

I recently had to have my computer scrubbed because of a major virus infection.  After repair and reloading all softwares I discovered that TurboTax had in fact NOT saved my 2009 return.  I can find the returns from 2008 and earlier, but neither on my C: drive, nor my external drive which I had used to backup the computer several times following return filing, can I locate the 2009 return.  This tells me that in fact TurboTax never did save the return either in the PDF or the data file format.  Unless TurboTax changed their file address for saving data files on returns I can come to no other conclusion except the software did not save the return.  Has anyone else had this problem with TurboTax 2009?

In 2009 TT changed their Auto Save facility such that the user must now pick what to save, rather than having both the .tax and .PDF files automatically saved to your hard drive.  So if you have to try to recover your 2009 info from a .PDF file, I found it necessary to recreate the file from my printed version of my taxes (it took nearly 8 hours and it wasnt exactly the same as the one I submitted, but it was close).  I will paste the discussion I had with TT below:

Please wait while we find an agent to assist you...
You have been connected to 05_JanCedrik A.
05_JanCedrik A: Hello Frank--thank you for contacting TurboTax. May I take a moment to read your question?
Frank Nieto: hi Jan
05_JanCedrik A: Good morning frank, thank you for holding, how are you doing today?/
Frank Nieto: better now,,, was a tough few of days getting 2010 taxes completed
05_JanCedrik A: That is so nice to hear.
Frank Nieto: wasnt so nice when i discovered, on Monday, that TT hadnt saved the .tax file of my 2009 taxes
05_JanCedrik A: If i understand you correctly you want to know whay turbotax only saved your returns as a.tax2009 file, am i correct?
Frank Nieto: yes, which turned out to be only a .PDF file and TT wouldnt read it.
Frank Nieto: Oh, and by the way, why does TT read Taxcut .PDF and not its own PDF files?
Frank Nieto: This auto save facility that worked in the past years cost me 8 hours of work rebuilding my 2009 taxes, which I couldnt get exactly right,,, but got it close.
05_JanCedrik A: I see, a PDF file or portable document format is only a screenshot of your returns. you cannot read it through turbotax.you can only read it if you have an adobe reader or a foxit reader.
Frank Nieto: well,,,, I have had to become an expert on this subject, You are not answering my question?
Frank Nieto: Questions?
05_JanCedrik A: Let mu just check on this , please allow me a moment..
Frank Nieto: This cant be new news to TT. It is all over the net and I am not the only one to run into this problem.
05_JanCedrik A: I do apologize for the inconvenience frank.
05_JanCedrik A: Thank you for holdong i really apprciate your patience.
Frank Nieto: are you patronizing me or is this sincere?
05_JanCedrik A: I manage to pull up an article here. i will provide you the link.

05_JanCedrik A: Please refer to that link.
05_JanCedrik A: I am sincere frank.
Frank Nieto: I have read all I could find on this and this article is probably one I have already read.
05_JanCedrik A: I see, i understand.. can you please give it another try, is that okay?
Frank Nieto: yep,, read it
Frank Nieto: does not answer my questions
05_JanCedrik A: I see, okay.
Frank Nieto: here is an idea, I am really not a happy TT customer right now. at this point, unless I get some kind of satisfaction from TT, I will not buy TT software again (oh, and BTW, I would like my automatic subscription to be cancelled); perhaps it would be a good idea if we conferenced a telephone call with your supervisor to resolve my problems.
Frank Nieto: Note: I have been a TT customer for nearly a decade.
05_JanCedrik A: By the way frank, may i ask did you save your 2009 returns as .ta file?
05_JanCedrik A: I mean a .tax file.
Frank Nieto: did you mean .tax file. I have now since I recreated it from a printed .PDF file.
05_JanCedrik A: I understand frank
Frank Nieto: which took me a whole day to recreate after educating myself about TT file structures and trying to convert a PDF to a .tax file.
Frank Nieto: unsuccessfully, I might add.
05_JanCedrik A: We do aplologize for the inconvenience that this has brought you... let me just go ahead and cancel your automatic renewal subscription.
Frank Nieto: thankyou
Frank Nieto: Jan, thankyou for the apology, but it really feels like you are trying to smooze me to mollify my frustration with TT.
05_JanCedrik A: Thank you for holding frank, i have now succesfully cancelled your subscription to automatic renewal.
Frank Nieto: The bottom line is that I really like the TT software, but this "glitch" is unconscionable and should be renumerated by TT.
05_JanCedrik A: Thank you for that frank, don't worry i'll be making a note on this matter.
Frank Nieto: no,, not a note. IF this hasnt gone to Corporate it should go now! You are going to lose thousands, if not millions of customers because of this "glitch".
Frank Nieto: and you still havent answered my question of: "why, in 2009 has TT not been saving a .tax file, when i previous years the auto save command has?"
05_JanCedrik A: You 2009 Turbotax should have save a .tax2009 file. Have you tried to check your Documents for it?
Frank Nieto: I just told you, I have become an expert on TT file structure. I spent a day and a half searching and educating myself about the files........ you know what,,, you are running me in circles,,, I would like to speak to a supervisor.
05_JanCedrik A: I am certain Frank that your Turbotax 2009 should have saved a tax file, because everytime you use Turbotax, it accesses that tax file because your information is saved in that file.
Frank Nieto: it didnt
05_JanCedrik A: When did this happen, where it didnt saved a tax file, is it just recently?
Frank Nieto: The original time was last year when i did my taxes, but when i just redid my 2009 taxes I had to tell it save a tax file. it would have just saved a PDF file again.
Frank Nieto: Supervisor, Please!
05_JanCedrik A: My supervisor would advise the same. However let me find an available supervisor. Please wait.
05_JanCedrik A: Would it alright Frank if we connect you to the "Working on my Returns" Dept since they are experts in working around tax files.
05_JanCedrik A: They would have a reason for you why your tax file wasnt saved.
Frank Nieto: no,,, I dont think so. I am on the phone with another TT account specialist. Thanks for your time, but your answers have not satisfied my questions and TT needs to have these answers for the millions of customers that have had this problem.
Frank Nieto: I know it is not your fault the software has had a glitch and you are giving me the "party line" answers, but it just isnt good enough. I hope i havent ruined your day, have a good one.
05_JanCedrik A: Not a problem frank... i understand,if i were in the same situation i would have feel the same way.... and i am so sorry if i wasn't able to provide you the right resolution..
Frank Nieto: What TT should do is provide next years same edition of TT for no charge. This would keep me as a TT customer.
05_JanCedrik A: most definitely frank.

This was the reply I recieved from TT.  I am waiting to see what comes from corporate, but I am not hopeful after hearing the "party line" from the customer specialists.
