My wife Cristina Destajo booked a flight to Canada on 11/07/12 from lax and we cannot find her confirmation from her email.

If you have the flight numbers, call United and give them the flight information and they will be able to tell you if the reservation/tickets are confirmed. They can also give you a confirmation.
