My Ukulele As An Extra Carry On ? (international Flight)

Hello my name is maddy and I am flying tomorrow from Honolulu all the way to berlin in germany. I read on the webside that I am allowed to carry one bag plus a personal item such as a laptop bag on the plane. The problem is that I also have to get my ukulele home. Is there a fee that i have to pay which then allows me to take the ukulele on board as a third item ? I called united but I was really confused because i was told I could check it 25 $ and go ahead carry it onth eplane but when I asked if that would make me able to carry all thre bags (backpack, laptop and ukulele) he said no. Can someobe please clear the confusion ? Thanks Maddy
