Take A Wall Plaque

I have a 31"x13" wall plaque, less than 10lbs, would like to take it from Panama, Central America to Toronto, Ontario, on my flight. Can I bubble wrap it and take it onboard with me?

Unfortunately the dimensions would exceed the allowed carry-on baggage measurements specified below.  Specifically the 31" item exceeds the 14" by 9" by 22" maximums.  You may have to ship it ahead of time or check it at the ticket counter, making sure it is carefully wrapped and boxed well.  It might also be a good idea to pay insurance if it's of value and you ship or check it.  The only other option is to purchase a seat on the aircraft for the item, which I know is drastic and expensive, but I know people with precious music instruments who travel and can't fit it in the overhead or seat in front of them, so they purchase an extra seat for the instrument. There have been situations where the airline allowed oversized carry-ons to be brought on aircraft and it depends on how full the flight is, availability of overhead space and of course the person at the gate.  The problem is, you can't count on that and would need to be prepared to have the item checked at the gate if they won't allow it onboard.

From United's Website:

United Airlines will permit one bag plus one personal item (see below), per customer to be carried on the aircraft.

The maximum combined linear measurement (length + width + height) of carry-on bags must not exceed 14 inches x 9 inches x 22 inches (23 x 35 x 56 cm) or 45 linear inches (114 cm).

Please note: All carry-on items must be stowed under the seat in front of you or in the overhead bin. Items may not be stowed in the seat back pocket. Any item in excess of carry-on baggage size or allowance requirements as listed above will be checked to your final destination and may be subject to applicable checked baggage fees.

Any item that is requested to be carried inside the cabin of an aircraft and is determined to be acceptable, but is so fragile or bulky that a seat is required, will be considered cabin-seat baggage. United Airlines will allow a customer to purchase a ticket for a cabin-seat baggage item so that the item may be carried on board and transported in a seat.

In addition to one carry-on item, you may bring one personal item such as a shoulder bag, backpack, laptop bag or an item of similar size.
