Extension Of Vouchers For Plane Not Arriving Until Next Day?

We were issued vouchers to be used on another United flight within one year. However when we tried to plan a flight all were o.k. until we added the final segment and was told because it was a Continental flight we could not use the vouchers. How can we extend the date for another 6 months or year? w
