Can I Get A Refund ?

I Have booked a round trip ticket for my mother 4/14/12 flight UA117 from Newark to HK. My mother left the country earlier due to family emergency so she did not use the trim from Newark to HK . The booked return date is 4/17/12, when she got to the airport to check in she was told that she can not use the ticket as its been cancelled by UA as she did not use the 1st trip. she had no choice to buy another ticket as she must enter the country at that day. and she wants to book a round trip 3-6months ticket, the UA front desk worker trid about half hour, she only get a one way ticket, my mother was told that she can only get one way ticket at that moment as she can not book a round trip successfully in the computer system. My mother was told to book the one way tkt at that moment as the bording time was approaching, and she can call the airline to change to a round trim once she landed in USA. The one way ticket she purchase in HK airport on 4/17/12 around 10am. Flight UA 16. Her name is WU BAI FANG. Please check and advise how this will be resolved. We need at least one way ticket for her to go back to Hongkong within 3- 6 months from today. I am looking forward for your feedback ! Sincerely Carol Luo
