How do I cancel my Verizon contract?

I want to cancel my Verizon contract, but they make it really complicated. I have read a lot of Verizon cancellation nightmares so I was wondering if anybody had figured out the best process to cancel.

Wait for the day the contract ends (usually @ 11:59PM of that day) Call Verizon wireless (611) and cancel before 11:59PM. If your billing period doesn't correspond with contract end date you'll have to pay for that months bill or they will charge u early termination (mine is 60.00 because my billing period ended 1 day before contract end date!)
