Just Got Added To My Fiance's Account, Bill Extremely High. Why?!

A couple of months ago I got added to his account, now there are two phones total on his account. We make regular phone calls and use texting, and hardly ever use internet. The representative at the verizon store told us we would only have to pay $150-160 a month at the most, depending on our usage. We have paid all our set up fees. The last payment we had to make was $303 and now we owe $489.96. I don't understand why we owe so much money. We DO NOT make any foreign calls out of the country, either--so what's the problem? Cannot afford to pay so much for our phone bill!!
