Help With Making Calls To The Us From France With Incredible 2, Please

I just left for France, where I am now. Before leaving I called Verizon wireless to verify that I could make calls from here to the US. I was assured that $1.29 per minute would be the charge, and that I needed to set up nothing special. ALL I GET ON MY PHONE IN FRANCE IS A MESSAGE: NO SERVICE. please help, thanks. My wireless number is 570 449 4020
