Failure Of System To Recognize Drive

I recently purchased a Western Digital SATA 500GB Caviar Green Hard drive and installed. I didn't make any changes to the drive because there were no instructions included. The existing drive is a SATA 500GB Seagate installed in "position 0 as master". I installed the new drive in "position 1 as master". When I turned the system on,it couldn't that the new drive existed. Moving it to "position 2 as master" didn't make any difference. There were no options for "slave" so I assumed this is a feature of SATA. Do I need to get a copy of the installation software before I can install it?
