What Is The Drip Pan?

Hello,          I am trying to clean out my oven and I am unsure if i have to take out the bottom piece in the stove, because the metal piece underneath the oven is farely dirty and I need to know if I can reach it to clean it. So is that metal piece the drip pan? Also i believe the stuff in the bottom pan is causing the oven to smoke because every time I go to use the oven it causes my smoke alarm to go off and I know everything above in reach is clean. Thank you for you time.
