Water Pouring Out Under Dispenser

I have a whirlpool duet sport and I went to do a load of wash today and water started pouring out of the washer just under the detergent dispenser....I took the dispenser out to see what would happen.  It seems like the water starts to go in then hits an obstruction and starts to back up and come out the front...Do you have any idea what could be wrong?
