Reaching The End Of Rope. Getting Vengance

I have a colleague that has a Yahoo professional e-mail address that had a problem a month ago. All of their Yahoo e-mail and e-mail addresses were deleted from their Yahoo account.  In that same period, somebody sent an e-mail to all the people in the e-mail address book requesting a response; however if one looks closely to the e-mail address, they had substituted a “1” (number) for an “l” (alphabet).  Thus, an unaware party would have been responding to the wrong address. It took them a week to reconstruct their e-mail address book.  They also changed passwords several times. Fast forward, to yesterday, the same thing happens again.  This time, I received an e-mail from the legitimate address; but when I went to respond the address had been changed.  They said the original of the e-mail sent to me had disappeared off their e-mail queue.  Have some questions: 1)     How did they get into the Yahoo account a second time?  Even though the password account had been changed several times in the last month. 2)     Is it possible a virus has been transmitted in an original e-mail, and it resides on every recipients’ computer and then automatically changes the e-mail address to forward somewhere else? 3)     What can one do to safeguard against such shenanigans? 4) Don't blame them for I-phone usage either..
