New Ipod Nano - Computer Is Not Recognizing It

Hello! we need help. We have a new ipod nano. We plugged it into our computer correctly. We used the tutorial, which says that an "assistant" will pop up to guide you through the registration process. That is our problem - the "assistant" does NOT pop up. What do you think is the problem?
