At&t Booting Old Voice Plans For Changing Service Areas?

I have a cheap Mid-1990's Cell phone plan from when there were more companies and they were offering now unheard of lifetime voice plans. With all the mergers from Pac-Bell Wireless, then Cingular, then SBC, now AT&T, things have changed, and prices have skyrocketed. Is there a way to get AT&T wireless to change service areas (and phone #s) without forcing you off an old voice plan (Cingular)? They insist they have to change the voice plan and offer a new one that costs at least twice as much.
