Unlocking A Sim Card

Hello, I live in Australia but while on holidays in the US I bought an AT&T GO mobile phone in New York only to find it doesn't work back here in Australia. I put my old SIM card in but the phone is locked and the original SIM card from your company just comes up as 'No service'. The sales assistant I bought it from assured me that I could use it again in Australia but that's not the case. Can the phone be unlocked please? My mobile number is 9175156574.
