Stop Midtrip

I am getting ready to book a flight on American. My questions is this? I will be flying out of SAN to OGG, with a stopover in LAX. The return trip is OGG to LAZ to SAN. However, I want to stop in LAX and not continue on to SAN. Is this possible? We want to spend a few days with our daughter in LAX, and then fly out of to return home.
