How To Change Name On A Reservation

I used miles to purchase a ticket for a friend who lives on the other side of the country. It was on hold and I could not figure out how to change from my name to hers so I just purchased it. Two days later I called AA. They said I have to pay $150 to reinstate my miles and make a new reservation! I have gold status and have been a member for over 10 years. Is there any way I can avoid this fee?

That's a great question. Airlines regard name changes as "contract breakers." So they offer such resolutions at a cost. Based on many years of airline and travel industry experience, there is very little possibility you can avoid the $150 fee. I know it's easy for me to offer hindsight advice, but it probably would have been better to cancel the reservation on hold with your name as the traveler, and then rebook the reservation logged into your Advantage Account specifying someone else as the passenger/traveler. You can use your miles to book travel for anyone you choose. You just need to make sure you specify the traveler's name at the time of booking. Sorry if that doesn't offer the answer you wanted.
