1. Check the Lid Switch
The lid switch ensures the washer doesn't run when the lid is open. If it's faulty, the washer may fill but not agitate.
Test the Lid Switch: Open and close the lid to listen for a clicking sound. If you don't hear a click, the lid switch might be broken.
Multimeter Test: If you have a multimeter, you can test the lid switch for continuity. Disconnect the washer from power, locate the lid switch (usually near the door hinge), and test it. If it doesn't have continuity, it needs to be replaced.
2. Inspect the Drive Belt
The drive belt connects the motor to the transmission and agitator. If it's loose, broken, or worn out, the agitator won't function.
Access the Belt: Unplug the washer and remove the back panel.
Examine the Belt: Look for signs of wear, fraying, or breakage. If the belt is damaged, replace it.
3. Examine the Agitator Assembly
The agitator may have a problem with its internal components such as the dogs (ratcheting mechanisms that help in the agitation process).
Remove the Agitator Cap: Pry off the cap at the top of the agitator.
Inspect Agitator Dogs: If the dogs are worn out or broken, the agitator won't move correctly. Replace the agitator dogs if necessary.
4. Check the Motor Coupling
The motor coupling connects the motor to the transmission. If it's broken, the washer will fill and drain but won't agitate or spin.
Access the Motor Coupling: Unplug the washer and lay it on its back to access the bottom.
Inspect the Coupling: Look for broken or worn parts. If damaged, replace the motor coupling.
5. Test the Timer and Control Board
If the timer or control board is faulty, the washer might not advance to the agitation cycle.
Listen and Observe: Check if the timer advances during the cycle. If it gets stuck, the timer might need replacing.
Multimeter Test: Test the timer and control board for continuity and proper voltage.
6. Inspect the Transmission
If all else fails, the transmission itself might be the problem. This is a more complex issue and might require professional help.
7. Motor Issues
If the motor is malfunctioning, it might need to be replaced.
8. Check for Error Codes
If your model has a digital display, it might show error codes that can help diagnose the problem. Refer to the user manual for error code meanings.
