Google Checkout
I have been speaking to a seller about the purchase of a vehicle. It is on craigslsit but Google Checkout is supposedly handling the financial aspect of the sale. I have never completed a transaction through your serive. How do I find out if this is a legitimate sale, or if the person is running a scam of some sort? The price is really low for the vehicle and so it makes me leary.

As a merchant I've used both PayPal and Google Checkout [now Google Wallet] for years. As a buyer I'm not a big fan of either one, but PayPal at least has its "Purchase Protection" policy that should shield you from seller fraud. If there's the slightest question about the transaction, I would not use Google Checkout/Wallet. There's no good reason why the seller could not accept a PayPal payment [the cost to the seller is virtually identical, and no setup is required]. If the seller won't, move on.
