There are two ways to reset the Hotmail password. The first involves proving your identity by providing the location information and answering the security question you set at the time of creating the Hotmail account. The second way is to have the password reset instructions sent to your alternate email; hwoever, this works only when this information was supplied at the time of making the Hotmail account.

Additionally, If you cannot change password via conventional methods (ie - through security answer or alternate email address), it first needs to be verified. You can initiate the process of recovering your hotmail account here:

When you get your account verified and change the password, it should be changed to at least 7 characters, contain upper and lower case letters, numbers, and a special character
