Rear Axle Won't Engage.

The transmission switches gears just fine, however the rear axle spins slowly and the tires have free travel so the mower will not move with weight on it. I ensured that the wheel keys are in place and that the drive belt is in good shape and moving fine. Not sure how to engage the axle? Must be something I am missed.

Each wheel will have a key which holds the wheel onto the shaft. If any of these keys are missing the wheel will turn when off the ground. However as in a car the device has a differential and it will drive the easiest wheel first. So that wheel will be the one that has the fault. Remove each wheel and check that there are links to hold the wheel on. They are called a 'woodruff key' which is a piece of metal shaped like a small rectangle which may also have a curved side. Refer to page 25 of the PDF downloadable here. The likely event is either the wheel has been removed and the key lost or has broken. View the picture.

I have added a video of how the drive works.

Hope that helps you solve your problem.

Why does my hydrostatic transmission won't move?

By far, the most common reason for hydrostatic transmission failure is old hydraulic fluid. John Deere states that "Operating outside of the recommended oil air temperature range may cause premature hydrostatic transmission failure." Oil must be changed when its anti-foam additive decays.
