Engine Problem

i was driving on the freeway and started to pass another vehicle, i pushed the sport mode button and passed the other car i noticed the rpm's on my jag reved extremly high for about 20 seconds and i pushed the sport mode button to take it out of sportmode just as i exited the ramp it gave to hard jerks as if i threw it in a low gear and my car completely lost power and steering and i coasted down the exit ramp, i came to a stop put it into park and tried to start my car it made a awfull noise what sounded like pots and pans being banged together and stalled after 3 minutes of running i got out lifted the hood and could smell something was burning and smelled like it was coming nfrom underneath of the engine i tried to start my car again and it started for about 1 minute and stalled again i tried again and the battery died what could bthe problem be.?
