Leap Pad 2 Screen Stuck On Charging Screen?

I just bought my daughter the leap pad 2 for Christmas. The batteries went dead so I replaced the batteries. Now when I turn it on It shows to connect the leap pad to the computer. It won't go past this screen. If I replaced the batteries, why won't it just come on? I've tried connecting it to the computer and the screen still wont go away.
