No, the engine does not have to be removed to replace the timing chain on a 2002 Lincoln Continental. The timing chain is located on the front of the engine, and can be accessed by removing the timing chain cover. However, it is a complex and time-consuming job, and it is important to follow the service manual carefully.

Here is a general overview of the steps involved in replacing the timing chain on a 2002 Lincoln Continental:

Drain the engine oil and coolant.

Remove the accessory drive belts.

Remove the timing chain cover.

Mark the timing marks on the crankshaft and camshaft sprockets.

Remove the timing chain tensioners and guides.

Remove the old timing chain.

Install the new timing chain and tensioners.

Align the timing marks on the crankshaft and camshaft sprockets.

Install the timing chain cover.

Reinstall the accessory drive belts.

Refill the engine oil and coolant.

It is important to note that this is just a general overview, and the specific steps involved may vary depending on the exact engine model in your 2002 Lincoln Continental. It is always best to consult the service manual for your vehicle for specific instructions.

If you are not comfortable replacing the timing chain yourself, it is recommended that you take your vehicle to a qualified mechanic.

For a timing chain replacement, the engine is typically not required to be taken apart. Usually, the treatment can be carried out with the car's engine running. To remove and replace the timing chain, however, is a difficult and time-consuming task that frequently entails removing a number of parts, including the timing cover, water pump, and occasionally the oil pan. For precise instructions and information relevant to the make and model of your car, it's vital to reference the service manual or a qualified mechanic.
