Residue After A Cleaning Cycle

My washer is 2-3 years old and I have been using an Affresh tablet monthly without fail.  Lately we have noticed a smell on our clothes & towels.  I have cleaned out all the debris around the door gasket, everything that can be seen when the gasket is peeled back.  In the past 3 weeks I have run more than a dozen cleaning cycles in addition to our normal laundry.  In this time we have used Affresh, Tide washer cleaner, Washer-Fresh brand cleaner and even bleach.  Sometimes we use the built-in cleaning cycle (which uses cold water), other times the normal wash cycle with hot water.   Sometimes a chunk of the Affresh tablet can be found in the drum after running the built-in cleaning cycle, other times it has been consumed.   We have always used HE (mostly Tide) detergent, sometimes liquid, sometimes powder.  We have generally used a liquid fabric softener as well.   Today I ran a cleaning cycle with the drain hose going into a sink with the sink plugged.  The residue in the sink after all these cleaning cycles is astounding.  There is a powdery substance which is not dirt laying on the bottom of the sink and a filmy substance floating.  We have not used a powder detergent in these past 3 weeks.    I wonder what I have been doing wrong.
