Shows Are Unavailable

When I type titles into the search box, many are listed as unavailable.  Does this mean that they are DVDs that happen to be out on loan at the moment?  I did sign up for the DVD rental....and I haven't found one single DVD to borrow...they are all "unavailable".

I think that means they are unavailable through Netflix at all. You can browse instead and find titles that are available. It may also say they are just unavailable for instant streaming?

Netflix negotiates the licensing rights for use of it's media content.  These "rights" can be pulled at anytime by the distributors who own those rights.

If the movies or tv shows are in their data base it means they have had the rights in the past, current rights or future rights to offer the media for public usage.

Sometimes you will have a movie in your queue and notice there is a warning date that pops up in red...announcing that the movie or show is rotating off the instant list or rental list by a certain date. Other times one of your movies will just disappear without a warning.

Many times you will see movies with a Green Save button.  These shows are usually media that is coming into their inventory for marketing sometime in the near future. You should click on the Green Buttons and let them go into your unavailable holding queue.  When they become avaialable they will automatically pop up into your active queue.

Letting Netflix know you are interested in something helps to eventually get it.  If enough subscribers want something, Netflix may try to negotiate the rights in support of customer demand.

Let me guess: it's a music DVD. People hoard these because many of them are out of print; they order them and just keep them. Not fair at all to the rest of us. Unavailable means it's unavailable until they get another copy from the manufacturer, if they ever do. If they can't, the title will drop off the list.
