It only happens when your phone is communicating with the network, which is why you're finding it intermittent. It may be that some places where it's more frequent are on the edges of cells and your phone is regularly swapping towers. Make a call to your phone - you'll hear the sounds before your phone starts to ring.
The exact effect will depend on the proximity to the wiring that's carrying the signal, which might not necessarily be the speaker. Coiling the speaker wire, straightening the speaker wire, moving it around all might contribute. This is why real audio setups use balanced wiring.
The post-amplification speaker wire is the best place to start looking, it's basically a huge antenna that's plugged into a speaker.
If all the above doesn't work then It seems to be a low battery alert (a really annoying one). I turned off the device and charged it for 5 minutes turned it back on and it had stopped. You must also turn off the speaker during the charge processor it will continue making this noise. My guess is if this is still happening after recharging it and turning it off and on the battery is probably faulty and needs to be replaced. I have yet to deal with there customer service so not sure how it is, but hopefully they will replace it.
Hope this helps! Good Luck
