Slurred Sound Problem

What is causing recent slurred sound, constent, on TV? And can it be fixed? Thinking it was the TV speakers, we roiuted sound through a receiver and external speakers but the sound is still bad. It soiunds 'fuzzy' and the sounds, especially 's' type sounds are slurred and dominate. Samsung LN-S4096D - 40" LCD TV
