Glitches And Pauses In Playback

My GV-HD700, used for edit and playback, has recently developed brief freezing of a frame followed sometimes by a blank, quickly recovering, then the same again, and so on. is this due to a faulty mechanism, or dirty tape heads? I have tried cleaning with a tape cleaner, to no avail.
