Putting A New Driver On Your Insurance?

i just got my G2 today and i want to be put on my mothers insurance but the insurance is in my grandfathers name, do we have to go to the insurance office together or can i just fax the office my information from my driving school, and a copy of my license? also until i get put on the insurance can i drive by myself or with a insured driver?
