Can't Pull Start Rope

I was replacing the clutch on my Stihl Ms 170 chainsaw and used a screw driver down the the spark plug hole to stop the motor from turning. Now after putting it back together I try and start the chainsaw but the pull rope won't budge. What do I do to fix it or is it fixable?

I think you may have to remove the cover on the starter assembly and investigate. However take a look at this youtube video explaining the issues that arise with this model of chainsaw.

And this one.

Using a screwdriver down the spark plug hole to stop the engine from turning may have caused the piston to get stuck in the cylinder. Here are some steps you can try to fix the issue:
  1. Remove the spark plug and try to pull the starter rope. If the rope moves freely, the piston may be stuck in the cylinder.
  2. Put a few drops of penetrating oil or two-cycle oil in the spark plug hole and let it sit for several hours.
  3. Use a piston stop tool or a piece of rope to lock the piston in place. Insert the tool or rope into the spark plug hole and turn the engine until the tool or rope stops the piston.
  4. Gently tap the end of the clutch drum with a rubber mallet or a wooden block and a hammer. This may help loosen the piston.
  5. Once the piston is freed, reassemble the chainsaw and try starting it again.

If the above steps do not work, it is recommended that you take your chainsaw to a professional for repair.
