Changing A Flight Reservation

I am travelling from Australia tomorrow.  I have booked a return LA/Las Vegas flight 12/26/2010 - 12/30/2010 but we now only require the return sector ie Las Vegas/LA 12/30/2010.  Can we cancel the first sector and retain the return or do we need to cancel the entire booking and rebook the return flight only?
