Is It Possible To Check Into Just The Second Part Of My Trip?

For example, I have a flight from Grand Rapids to Chicago to New York City. The flight is nonrefundable, so I can't cancel without being charged a $150 fee. I now wish to just fly from Chicago to New York City, is it possible to just check into this leg of my trip?
