After reading your question, I first thought you were interested in a refund for a ticket you never used due to a death in the family. After closer review, I believe you are asking about the possibility of a refund or reimbursement of a portion of the amount you paid to travel because of a death in your family.

I recommend contacting United and explaining your situation. You will need your ticket number, flight information and it will benefit you to send documentation such as an obituary notice, death certificate or letter from the funeral home supporting your reason for a compassion refund.
