Lost Phone, Friend Gave Me One But Verizon Won't Unlock It

I have contract with verizon. My phone was lost or stolen so a friend gave me his old iphone but verizon won't unlock it. I am not finacialliy able to purchase a new phone so should I just cancell my verizon contract?
