Backflow refers to the reversal of the normal flow of water in a plumbing or irrigation system. Backflow can occur when there is a change in pressure in the system, such as when a main water line is shut off or when a pump is turned on or off. Backflow can also occur when there is a problem with a valve or other component in the system.

Many municipalities require that backflow prevention devices be installed on irrigation and other non-potable water systems to protect the public water supply from contamination. The specific requirements for backflow prevention can vary depending on the municipality, but generally include the installation of a backflow preventer on the system.

Whether a specific unit comes with a built-in backflow preventer or not depends on the manufacturer and the specific model. It's best to check the product specifications or consult the manufacturer to determine if the unit you are considering comes with a built-in backflow preventer.

If the unit does not come with a built-in backflow preventer and your municipality requires one, you will need to purchase and install one separately. It is important to make sure that the backflow preventer you purchase is appropriate for the specific system you have and meets the requirements of your municipality.

It's always a good idea to consult with a professional plumber or irrigation specialist when installing or maintaining backflow prevention devices to ensure that the installation is done correctly and in compliance with local regulations.
