Itunes Software Update

I just recieved a new Ipod touch. I was trying to sync with my Itunes library. I am unable to do this because it says I need newest addition of Itunes software. I am apprehensive to update my Itunes software because last time I did, I lost my whole Itunes music library.  Could you please instruct me on how to update Itunes software without losing my Itunes Library.  Thanks! LYnn Novak
