Missing Passport On The Airplane.

Last week on thursday, i flied from Chicagon Ohare to LAX with an airplane with nunber 607 which belongs to American Airlines. I sit on the seat 14A. After i turned back my home i couldnt find my passport. I am suspectful whether i forgot my passport in the basket which ic located back of the seat in front of my seat 14A. HOw can i learn that my passport is not there?
