NO, this spark ignition range top should certainly not be leaking gas. Not only is it not normal, it is dangerous.

Per the Dacor Eg366 installation manual, it may be time to call for help. But first check for gas leaks:

  • Turn all cooktop control valves to the OFF position.
  •  Turn on the gas supply valve and check all lines and connections for leaks using a soap and water solution or a gas leak detector.
  • Turn the gas supply valve off

You know that an unvented gas leak can result in an explosion with the least spark. I imagine that the leak you are smelling is from gas that is burning off when you turn the burners on. So far you have been lucky.

If this is a newer installation and is still covered by the warranty, you can contact Dacor at 877-337-3226.

It is possible for the gas to be leaking at a few different locations so if you are testing, refer to the installation manual to see the various places that have joints (which can leak) on/below both the range top and the gas supply line or even the inline shutoff itself.

Remember one thing when working or exploring around gas lines, keep a window open for ventillation. Remember that sparks (which can ignite natural gas) can originate from turning on a flashlight or a light switch and of course the igniters for the burners.  (That's why firefighters carry special flashlights)

That's a nice looking range top and well worth operating safely.
