Downloading Pictures To Computer
When I plug the usb drive into the computer, camera shuts down and nothing downloads.

Check your batteries.
Press the power button to re-power the camera. The PC should then detect it.
It's always possible there could be a defect somewhere but these things are plug and play.
Did you install the drivers that came with the camera? If not go herre:
