My Master-credit Card Company Paid £500 Into An Incorrect Account Number

I phoned and asked my card company to do a balance transfer to my 16 digit Comet store account number Even though the number began with 9 the payent was made but has been lost because apparently it isn't possible to pay to a store  account number(I should have been asked for Comet's   Bank a/c no. and sort code. Is there any way, you know for the bank to trace and recover the payment. The credit card company say not and haven't offered to compensate even though they didn't question the accoont number details Thanks in anticipation
